An inter-Korean committee on establishing a peace zone in the West Sea will hold its first meeting in the North Korean border city of Gaesong Friday.

For the next two days, the two sides will discuss a plan to conduct an on-site survey for a proposed special economic zone in Haeju and bilateral cooperation around the mouth of the Han River.

The two sides will not touch on the sensitive issue of the Northern Limit Line (NLL), as bilateral general-level military talks held earlier this month failed to reach an agreement.

South Korea’s delegation will comprise seven senior working-level government officials and will be led by presidential security aide Baek Jong-chun. The North will be represented by Minister of Land and Environment Preservation Pak Song-nam.

Neither delegation includes any military officials.
