Koreas Discuss Peace Zone Projects

An inter-Korean committee on establishing a peace zone in the West Sea met for a second day of talks on Saturday in the North Korean city of Gaesong.

The two sides discussed the establishment of a special economic zone in Haeju, the development of Haeju port, the joint use of the Han River estuary and shared fishing grounds in the West Sea.

Based on the opinions presented in the Friday session, South and North Korea focused their discussions on the principles and detailed plans for each project including on-site inspections.

During the Friday session, South Korea's chief delegate Baek Jong-chun proposed joint development of the envisioned special economic zone as an export-oriented seaside industrial complex.

He suggested that it could be connected to the Gaesong Industrial Complex and South Korea's Incheon Port in the long term.

In response, North Korea's chief delegate Pak Song-nam proposed conducting an on-site survey for those projects next year.
