The Associated Press says North Korea has decided to close its embassy in Australia late this month after opening it in 2002.

Senior embassy official Pak Myong-guk was quoted as saying the mission could not be kept open due to financial difficulty stemming from his country's recent flood damage.

Pyongyang's diplomacy with Canberra will reportedly be conducted through its embassy in Indonesia.

The Australian Foreign Ministry expressed regret over North Korea's decision.
