The World Food Program (WFP) announced Monday it is sending emergency relief food to flood ravaged North Korea.
The WFP said 1,850 tons of wheat are headed to the North's Kangwon Province, the most afflicted area. The shipment will continue until the end of next month and is expected to feed some 145,000 North Koreans.
Rick Corsino, WFP country director in North Korea, said the flood came at a bad time, worsening the food crisis. The rice had been just recently harvested and was lying to dry before threshing.
North Korea urgently requested relief goods from international organizations last week to repair the damage and help victims of the severe flooding that swept its eastern coastal areas early this month.
