Two Koreas Enter Last Day of Railway Talks

The two Koreas have opened their last day of railway talks in Gaesong, North Korea, focusing on ways to improve cross-border freight train service.

The two sides agreed Tuesday to assess the results of the first survey conducted on the cross- border Gyeongui Line that needs to be repaired. They will decide later on whether additional examinations are necessary.

They also discussed measures to improve cargo transports between the South’s Munsan and the North’s Bongdong.

Seoul is said to have proposed adjusting the number of freigh train cars according to the actual amount of cargo. It also suggested diversifying shipping methods from the current container-only operation.

A government official said a number of other issues were discussed including emergency repairs on the train that will take the Beijing Olympic joint-cheering squad to China. The official said both sides will try their best to reach agreement.
