US Official: NK Continues to Develop Missiles

A senior U.S. defense official says North Korea continues to develop long-range ballistic missiles known as the Taepodong-Two, along with new mid-range missiles.

Lieutenant General Michael Maples, who heads the U.S. Defense Intelligence Agency, told the Senate Armed Services Committee Wednesday that the North Korean military, though lacking in training and equipment, has strong artillery capabilities and ballistic missiles.

He added the North could have several nuclear weapons made from plutonium extracted from its main nuclear reactor in Yongbyon.

U.S. National Intelligence Director John McConnell told the committee it's not clear whether North Korean leader Kim Jong-il will carry out his obligations under a six-way nuclear dismantlement accord.

He also said the U.S. intelligence community believes North Korea is still engaged in uranium enrichment and nuclear proliferation, activities which Pyongyang has denied.
