The Ministry of Information and Communication plans to implement a pilot service of digital audio broadcasting (DAB) next month with the Korean Broadcasting System (KBS).
The ministry has set up a committee charged with looking into the legal aspects of introducing a digital radio service and to examine ways of activating DAB-related industries.
The plan is in line with moves by the United States and European countries to step up the launch of a digital radio service.
The pilot service will be provided in the European standard known as "Eureka", the ministry said adding that, although it hopes to officially begin digital radio service in 2003, it plans to decide on the technical standard by mid-2002.
