A military flag taken from Korea during the Joseon era has returned home after 136 years.

In 1871, after a military clash between the last Korean kingdom and the United States, American soldiers took the flag, known as the Sujagi, as a trophy. It has since remained in the custody of the U.S. Naval Academy, which it is providing to the National Palace Museum of Korea on a ten-year loan.

The museum will put the flag in a special display from this Tuesday to May fifth.

The Sujagi was the flag of one of the generals in the 1871 battle. Under the flag, 350 Korean soldiers fought against foreigners on Ganghwa Island north of Seoul.
