China Assists NK in Responding to Potential Flooding

The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) says China recently provided North Korea with advanced equipment that will help Pyongyang forecast major floods.

WMO spokesman Paul Garwood told Radio Free Asia Tuesday that Beijing provided the North with a satellite-run system developed by the Chinese Academy of Space Technology. The system will allow the North to receive weather information from satellites of other countries.

Garwood said the system will help North Korean authorities improve flood response measures and their ability to warn people of rising flood waters.

Radio Free Asia said attention is being drawn to whether the North will pursue further cooperation in the meteorological field with the introduction of China’s high-tech system.
