Jogye Order to Tighten Buddhist Discipline

Written: 2008-04-07 17:23:15Updated: 0000-00-00 00:00:00

The nation’s largest Buddhist order will tighten discipline among Buddhist monks.

The Venerable Jigwan of the Jogye Order told reporters that monks would be required to strictly observe periods of meditation.

Otherwise, they will not be accepted to the Buddhist priesthood and will not be allowed to take exams to raise their rank.

Last year, corruption allegations were raised against some Jogye monks, causing some to call for the purging of impurities among Buddhist followers.

In its general assembly on March 20th, the Jogye Order decided to impose stringent rules on Buddhist training and meditation.
