A North Korean distilled liquor will hit U.S. shelves as early as next week.
A Korean-American businessman has been seeking to import the liquor, known as Pyongyang Soju, for over five years. Park Il-wu, the head of a North Korean trading firm based in the U.S., said the first shipment has arrived and is undergoing customs inspection.
It's the first time a U.S. importer has brought in the North Korean liquor.
The first shipment contained 16-hundred-60 boxes of Pyongyang Soju at a wholesale price of about 90 to 100 dollars for a 24-bottle box. Individual bottles are expected to retail at about ten to 20 dollars.
The liquor will be sold mostly at Korean bars and restaurants around New York.
Pyongyang Soju is made from corn, rice and glutinous rice with natural mineral water taken from 170 meters underground.
It's manufactured for export and is already sold in China and Japan.
