After the United States said Thursday that North Korea provided support for Syria's secret nuclear program, a South Korean official downplayed the announcement as "neither a surprise nor anything new."

The official said suspicions and controversy over the North's nuclear links with Syria must not grow. Instead, the official said, it should be addressed through verification.

The official stressed that Pyongyang should fully cooperate with that process to clear itself of suspicions about its alleged proliferation activities.
