US Officials in NK Discussing Food Aid

A U.S. delegation is visiting North Korea to discuss possible food aid to the impoverished state.

According to a diplomatic source in Washington Tuesday, three U.S. officials are currently in Pyongyang. Among them is National Security Council official Michael Magan, who oversees relief, stabilization and development at the council.

The source said the delegation arrived Monday in the North Korean capital to discuss the provision of up to 500-thousand tons of food aid.

If related talks proceed smoothly, Washington reportedly plans to disclose steps to help the North with its food shortage on a humanitarian basis. The announcement would roughly coincide with the North’s anticipated nuclear declaration.

Washington and Pyongyang have held discussions on food aid since the end of last year but failed to agree due to wide differences on the monitoring of rice distribution.
