North Korean leader Kim Jong-il has said food shortages are the most urgent matter being faced by his country.

The North's state-run Korean Central Broadcasting Station reported that Kim gave onsite guidance to farms in Gilju, North Hamgyeong Province.

The report said Kim pointed out problems preventing a higher output of farm products.

The North Korean leader’s remark has drawn much attention as some experts have predicted serious food shortages in the North that will lead to many starvation deaths.

Meanwhile, the United States is planning to provide 500-thousand tons of food aid.
