Seoul Mulls Purchase of Unused NK Fuel Rods

A senior official said Thursday the next round of six-party talks will include discussion of a proposal for Seoul to buy unused fuel rods from North Korea's Yongbyon nuclear facility.

The Foreign Ministry official told reporters that out of eleven measures to disable the facility, only three are left, including the removal of spent fuel rods and the disposal of unused ones.

Seoul has been considering buying the unused fuel rods since last year, but the issue has not been discussed at the six-party talks.

The official said the North will work with the United States to finalize its nuclear declarations.

Meanwhile, chief South Korean nuclear envoy Kim Sook will visit Russia soon for bilateral discussions on the next round of six-party talks. The talks are set to resume early next month.
