The Global Civic Sharing (GCS) group Saturday decided to launch a campaign to stop the domestic and international use of antipersonnel mines. An official at the Seoul-based civic group said...there are more than 1 million landmines buried in the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) and a growing number of people are becoming physically disabled due to the mines. The campaign calls for a domestic ban on stockpiling, production and export of antipersonnel landmines while facilitating an international solidarity campaign with the world's non-governmental organizations, including the International Campaign to Ban Landmines (ICBL). The GCS will expand its campaign for the donation of artificial limbs and wheelchairs for Cambodia. To that end, the organization decided to donate 100 wheelchairs to Siem Reap, Battambang and Phnom Penh. The organization also decided to support production of artificial limbs in cooperation with Handicap International, a Belgium-based NGO operating in Siem Reap. Kang Moon-kyu, director of the GCS said...the number of landmines buried in Cambodia is estimated at 5 million, causing 832 injuries last year alone.
