The Wall Street Journal has disclosed a number of problems regarding the United Nations Development Program’s (UNDP) projects in North Korea.
The daily said Wednesday the U.N. agency gave North Korean officials access to sensitive information and handed over technology that Pyongyang could use to divert hard currency. The paper also accused the UNDP of failing to trace how the North used the agency’s funds.
The paper said there's no way to confirm whether UNDP funds given to the North, estimated at some 72 million dollars, were delivered to the stated beneficiaries. The report said no one, except North Korean leader Kim Jong-il, is likely to know how they were actually used.
The UNDP halted its projects and withdrew its staff from the North in March last year after complaints by the United States. Washington had claimed the U.N. agency gave cash to the North without proper controls and hired employees recommended by North Korean authorities.
