Officials said Monday that the Korean Organizing Committee for the 2002 FIFA World Cup Korea/Japan and central and local governments are making last minute-checks for the Dec. 1 draw at the Busan Exhibition and Conference Center (BEXCO).
The National Police Agency will position 1,700 police officers at key posts, including hotels, BEXCO as well as Incheon, Kimpo and Kimhae Airports.
Metal detectors and police dogs will be put into action while specially trained commando units will accompany VIPs to thwart any possible terrorist attacks.
The 90-minute draw ceremony will be broadcast live around the world from 7 p.m. Dec. 1 (local time) to an estimated 1 billion viewers in 135 countries.
World soccer's governing body, FIFA, has yet to announce the identity of the 12 figures who will be carrying out the draw for the World Cup finals, although it has been reported four or five will be chosen by the Korean organizing committee, one or two by the Japanese organizing committee and six will be chosen by FIFA itself. Many experts expect Brazilian soccer legend Pele, Dutch superstar Johan Cruyff, as well as veteran players from the two host countries, Hong Myung-bo and Masami Ihara, are likely to be among the 12.
