Sepp Blatter, president of FIFA, soccer's world governing body, said Friday World Cup soccer champions will no longer automatically qualify for the next tournament of the soccer's quadrennial showpiece. FIFA's executive board made the decision during a meeting here on the eve of the final draw for next year's World Cup to be co-hosted South Korea and Japan. Accordingly, the winner of next year's World Cup will have to qualify for the 2006 tournament in Germany. So far, World Cup holders have gone straight into the finals of the next tournament. France, which automatically qualified for next year's tournament as reigning champions of the 1998 games, became the last beneficiary of the now-defunct privilege.
