S.Korean Company in Gaeseong Suspends Operations

A South Korean company operating at the North’s Gaeseong Industrial Complex has suspended its operations for the first time after a clash with a North Korean worker.

An official from the Unification Ministry said the company plant has been closed since June 12th, and its approximately 300 North Korean workers have not returned to work.

The official said a scuffle broke out on June 7th between the company’s South Korean manager and the head of North Korean female workers over supplies of soap and toilet paper. The company shut down its plant temporarily the next day and requested North Korean authorities replace the North Korean manager but was turned down.

The company’s management will visit the North Korean city and discuss the issue with related North Korean officials.
