Fire Station to Open in Mt. Geumgang

A fire department will open in North Korea’s Mount Geumgang resort on Tuesday.

The Unification Ministry said Friday that the fire department will be built to counter all types of safety-related accidents amid a rise in the number of tourists to the mountain resort.

Construction began in September for the firehouse that stands two stories high on a plot of land measuring 890 square meters. It will house three fire trucks and nine firefighters.

Hyundai Asan, the main operator of inter-Korean tourism programs, will pay for the management and operation of the firehouse. Construction costs amounting to some two-point-two billion won, meanwhile, came from the Inter-Korean Cooperation Fund.
