Cable Equipment Aid for NK Withheld

The government is actively considering delaying the provision of cable equipment to North Korea in the wake of the tourist shooting at Mount Geumgang.

The government was planning on sending various materials and equipment to the North this month to replace the copper cables of its military telecommunication lines with fiber-optic ones.

However, the government is now considering pushing back the date for the provision of such materials until an investigation on the tourist shooting is completed.

Earlier in May, the government agreed to use some three billion won in inter-Korean cooperation funds to improve communication networks between the two Koreas.

Also, within the government, calls are rising to delay a decision on sending 50-thousand tons of corn to the impoverished North through the World Food Program until the tourist shooting case is settled.
