Foreigners will be able to receive documents proving their registered status issued by ward, county and town offices from March next year. According to a revision to the nation's Immigration Law passed Thursday in a plenary session of the National Assembly, foreign residents in South Korea will be able to obtain documents proving their legal status more easily when the law takes effect next March. Currently such documents can only be issued by immigration offices. Aiming to curb illegal entry and exit of foreigners, the new law contains clauses to punish those who provide "documents or objects that can be used to aid illegal immigrants or emigrants." Under current law, only those who provide items such as forged passports are subject to punishment. The new law also authorizes immigration officials to seize documents when the holder faces expulsion. Currently, registered foreigners are required to report to the ward, county or town office if they change their place of residence, but under the new law they will also be able to report the change to immigration offices. Immigration Law violators will be required to pay fines within 10 days instead of the current seven.
