The government says it has yet to consider whether to halt tours to North Korea’s border city of Gaeseong following the shooting death of a South Korean tourist at Mount Geumgang.
Unification Ministry spokesman Kim Ho-nyoun told reporters Sunday that the government hasn't considered a suspension of the tours, adding that a number of details are being reviewed.
Kim made the statement after being asked if the tours will be halted before an inter-ministerial government task force on assessing tours to North Korea releases results of its evaluations. The task force was formed after a National Security Council meeting last week cited insufficient safety measures by tour operator Hyundai Asan following the tourist shooting at the scenic mountain resort.
The government concluded that it would not consider halting the tours unless the North continues to dismiss South Korea’s demands to accept on-site inspections and come up with measures to prevent the recurrence of incidents involving South Korean tourists.
Last Friday, the government hinted it would consider the suspension of Gaeseong tours if the safety of South Korean tourists was concluded to be in jeopardy.
