Chief of the 2002 World Cup Organizing Committee is convinced of the safe event.

The Chief of Korea's World Cup Organizing Committee, Lee Yeon-taek says that he is convinced that the 2002 FIFA World Cup will be a successful event free of terrorism. Lee was speaking at a briefing on the preparation of the event held at the National Press Club in Washington D.C. He stressed that Korea successfully hosted the 1988 Seoul Olympics without a single case of terrorist action although it was a time when tension had extremely escalated in Northeast Asia. He believes...although there is increasing concern over terrorism surrounding big sports events after the terrorist attacks in New York, Korea will make the 2002 World Cup a most secure event. The chief also said that it is inevitable that the United States and Korea will compete to advance to the next round of finals, since they are placed in a same group, but he added that he hoped that both sides will play good games.
