The U.S. Forces Korea (USFK) is planning a large development on the South Post of its garrison in Yongsan. Spokesman Col. Samuel Taylor said Friday that USFK is promoting a plan to build a large apartment complex to replace the obsolete officers' quarters on South Post, with a view to break ground for construction next summer. He added...when the plan is finalized, it will be referred to the South Korean government for consultation under the Status-of-Forces Agreement (SOFA). The USFK will reportedly build 20 eight-story housing buildings, for a total of 1,066 apartments on an area of about 148,500 square meters, where officers' quarters now stand. The plan is subject to agreement by the Defense Ministry as the owner of the land and of Seoul City, as well, because it has a plan to build a new City Hall building in the area after USFK moves out of Yongsan in the future.
