Gov't to Console Separated Family Members

The government is reportedly planning a large-scale event for families split between North and South Korea since the Korean War.

A government official said Wednesday that the event will seek to console the families who were hoping to be briefly reunited with relatives in North Korea. Such meetings have been suspended amid strained inter-Korean ties.

The official said construction of a permanent reunion center at the North’s Mount Geumgang was completed on July 12th, but furnishing and remaining works have been put on hold due to the killing of a South Korean tourist at the mountain resort earlier this month.

The official added that both the official opening of the center is expected to be delayed.

The 12-story building with about 206 rooms was constructed under an agreement made at an inter-Korean Red Cross meeting in 2002 in hopes of setting up a permanent base for reunions.
