Navy to Hold 2008 Int’l Fleet Review in October

Busan will host the 2008 International Fleet Review in October.

Celebrating the 60th anniversary of the establishment of the Korean government and armed forces, the Korean Navy will invite naval forces from 12 nations, including the United States and Japan, to the event from October fifth to the tenth.

At the event will be some 50 naval vessels and 30 airplanes including the nation’s Aegis-class destroyer 'King Sejong the Great' and the large multipurpose transport vessel 'Dokdo.' Also, the United States’ nuclear-powered aircraft carrier 'George Washington' will enter the nation's port for the first time.

On October fifth, the first day of the event, the fleets from home and abroad will be unveiled to the public. On October seventh, all participating naval vessels and aircraft will be mobilized for inspection.

The International Fleet Review dates back to 1342 when Edward the Third of England reviewed his fleet. Korea last hosted the International Fleet Review in 1998.
