Jang Mi-ran Wins Weightlifting Gold

South Korea's Jang Mi-ran crushed the competition in the women's over-75 kilogram weightlifting event, giving her nation its seventh gold at the Beijing Olympics.

In the competition held on Saturday, nine days into the Games, the 25-year-old Jang lifted 186 kilograms in the clean and jerk and 140 kilograms in the snatch for a combined total of 326 kilograms, setting the world record. Olha Korobka of Ukraine won the silver medal.

Earlier in the day, South Korea garnered a bronze medal in the men's badminton doubles event. The team of Hwang Ji-man and Lee Jae-jin defeated Jonas Rasmussen and Paaske Lars of Denmark two games to one.

In the mixed doubles badminton event, the team of Lee Hyo-jung and Lee Yong-dae beat Indonesia two games to one to advance to the finals. The men's handball team also advanced to the quarterfinals after beating Egypt 24-22.

In baseball, South Korea defeated Japan 5-3 for a third win at the Olympics.

As of Saturday night, South Korea has won seven gold, nine silver and four bronze medals, ranking them fourth in total medal standings. China tops the rankings with 27 golds, followed by the United States with 16.
