Gov’t to Start Safety Checks at Gaeseong Complex

The government will conduct safety inspections of the construction sites in the North’s Gaeseong Industrial Complex.

The Unification Ministry said it set up an inspection team of six experts from the Korea Institute of Registered Architects, the Korea Land Corporation and the Gaeseong Industrial District Management Committee.

Safety inspections will take place on site from Wednesday to Friday.

Last month, at a construction site in Gaeseong, building frames collapsed, killing a North Korean worker and injuring four others.

Since the complex opened in 2004, a total of eight people, including four South Koreans and four North Koreans, have been killed in accidents that could possibly have been prevented had the proper safety measures been in place.
