NK Begins Restoring Yongbyon Complex

The government says North Korea has begun restoring its nuclear facilities at its Yongbyon nuclear complex.

The Foreign Ministry said Thursday that Pyongyang’s recent move not only goes against efforts toward denuclearization but also impairs the process of the six-way nuclear talks.

The ministry said it is holding close consultations with the other members of the nuclear discussions on how to counter the North’s recent action, urging Pyongyang to refrain from aggravating the situation any further.

U.S. personnel working with North Koreans at Yongbyon reported the news of Pyongyang's nuclear restoration to Washington, and Seoul received notification Wednesday night.

Late last month, the North said in a statement that it will suspend the disabling of nuclear facilities at Yongbyon and would consider rebuilding them. Pyongyang said it was taking the measure because the U.S. had failed to fulfill its promise of removing the North from its terrorism blacklist even though a nuclear declaration had been provided.
