KEPCO Mulls 930 Bln Won Equipment Disposal

The Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) may dispose of lighter-water nuclear reactor equipment worth 830-million dollars (930-billion won).

Grand National Party lawmaker Kim Jung-hoon disclosed an internal KEPCO report to terminate light-water nuclear reactor projects in Sinpo, North Korea. The projects have been suspended since 2003, one year after the second nuclear standoff.

The report said KEPCO had agreed with the Korea Peninsula Energy Development Organization (KEDO) to bear all termination expenses, about 162-million dollars, in return for the rights to project-related facilities and equipment.

KEPCO decided the nuclear equipment and turbines were inappropriate for export or domestic use due to outdated technology and incompatible specifications. Although immediate disposal would be economical, the corporation is considering storing the equipment until 2010 in case the project resumes.
