S. Korea Top Travel Spot Due to Weak Won

South Korea has emerged as a top travel destination for foreigners following the recent jump in the won-dollar exchange rate.

According to the Korea Tourism Organization Thursday, U.S. travel magazine “Travel Agent” picked South Korea as the best travel spot in Asia in its latest edition due to fluctuations in the foreign exchange rate. Sri Lanka came in second followed by Japan, India and Thailand.

The won-dollar exchange rate hovered at around 950 won per dollar until the end of last year. However, the rate recently rose to eleven-hundred won per dollar, allowing foreigners to spend more freely in Korea than in the past.

Meanwhile, Mexico was picked as the best travel destination in North America following a sharp fall in the peso. Britain was picked as the worst country to travel to in terms of foreign exchange rate fluctuations with the pound-dollar rate rising to two dollars per pound.

An official at the Korea Tourism Organization said the agency plans to use the foreign exchange changes to attract more than seven-million foreign tourists this year.
