Koreas Discussing Energy Aid

The two Koreas are holding working group talks on the provision of economic and energy aid to the North under a six-party nuclear agreement.

The talks, which were proposed by Pyongyang, are taking place at the truce village of Panmunjeom.

The two Koreas are expected to focus discussions on an agreement reached in Beijing in July. Under the accord, South Korea, the U.S., China and Russia agreed to provide some 950-thousand tons of heavy oil to the North by October in line with Pyongyang’s disablement efforts.

The South’s delegation is also expected to urge North Korea to immediately resume disablement efforts.

The North suspended nuclear disablement operations in mid-August and has recently shown signs of restoring nuclear facilities in protest of Washington’s delay in removing the North from a terrorism blacklist.
