Gov’t to Decide on NK Energy Aid in Mid-Oct

The government will wait and observe the nuclear situation in North Korea two weeks into October before deciding on whether to suspend promised energy aid to the North.

Pyongyang has recently halted its nuclear disablement process and moved to restore a key nuclear facility.

In a news conference with foreign reporters in Seoul, Vice Unification Minister Hong Yang-ho said South Korea has yet to make any concrete decision regarding energy aid for North Korea.

However, Hong went on to say that energy aid may be affected should Pyongyang continue to restore the Yongbyon nuclear reactor.

He said Seoul would consider sending financial aid to North Korea to resolve the issue of South Korean prisoners of war and abductions committed by the communist state.
