North and South Holding Military Talks

The two Koreas are holding working-level military talks at the border village of Panmunjeom.

Thursday’s talks represent the first inter-Korean meeting since President Lee Myung-bak took office, and are the first military talks since late January.

A Defense Ministry official said the two sides are likely to focus discussions on the implementation of inter-Korean military agreements signed at previous military talks. The official said North Korea may raise a number of different issues with the implementation of such agreements.

Discussions are likely to center on cross-border transport, communications and customs within inter-Korean zones, as well as ways to modernize military communication channels.

Some are saying the North might issue critical remarks of Seoul’s policy toward Pyongyang.

The military talks were proposed by the North late last month.
