'S. Korea,US Prepared for Korean Contingency'

The commander of U.S. forces in Korea says both Seoul and Washington are prepared for any contingency on the Korean Peninsula.

General Walter Sharp said during a briefing at the Defense Department in Washington Wednesday that South Korea and the U.S. are prepared for any action in North Korea, adding that nothing out of the normal has been detected.

Asked if another group of U.S. forces in Korea will be temporarily dispatched to Iraq, Sharp said there are currently no such plans.

On reports that North Korea fired two short-range missiles in the Yellow Sea Tuesday, Sharp said the U.S. Forces Korea are closely watching the communist state. He added that the U.S. continues to be concerned about the development, the proliferation and the testing of missile systems in North Korea.
