Seoul metropolitan government officals said Thursday that a select group of 10,000 volunteers will help the FIFA World Cup finals run smoothly outside the arena. The city government plans to put 10,000 elite volunteers into the event starting in March, out of 47,000 currently enrolled at the New Seoul Volunteers Center which provides relevant training. In particular, 2,500 people who pass language tests will provide translation and guide services for foreigners. The language service will cover Japanese, Chinese, French, Spanish and German as well as English. Outside stations and terminals, the city will add 64 tourist information booths to the present 38 already operating to help foreigners. The volunteers will work as tourist guides and assist with lodging, traffic, and maintenance outside the arenas. From between 70 to 80 percent will come from the "ladies' division," a group comprising females between the ages of 40 and 50, or from the ranks of the retired.
