WFP Warns of Humanitarian Emergency in N.Korea

The World Food Program (WFP) says North Korea’s northeastern region may be facing a humanitarian emergency.

The U.N. agency said the food supply situation has drastically deteriorated in the North Hamgyeong and Ryanggang Provinces, and parts of South Hamgyeong Province, due to insufficient international aid.

In its Operational Priorities report, the WFP is projecting that the amount of food aid required for the next six months will come up about 147-thousand tons short.

The report also noted that the food situation for about two-point-seven million people on the North’s west coast has also begun to deteriorate, and many food stores on the east coast will run out by next month.
