Jeju Prepares Produce Shipment for NK

Jeju Island has decided to send some ten-thousand tons of tangerines and carrots to North Korea this month.

The Unification Ministry in Seoul said Monday that Jeju Island is currently negotiating with the North on the issue.

A ministry official said funding for the island’s delivery of the goods will be taken out of the four million won earmarked for transportation costs regarding the shipment of agricultural products to the North.

Between 1998 and 2007, Jeju Island has sent some 46-thousand tons of tangerines and 17-thousand tons of carrots to the impoverished North.

The Unification Ministry reportedly plans to keep up its support of the island’s project, which is expected to continue into the next decade.
