Gov’t Seeks to Preserve Independence Sites in China

The government is seeking to preserve historic sites of Koreas' independence movement in Shanghai, China.

The city was at the center of the independence movement against Japanese colonial rule in the early 20th century.

The Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs noted Shanghai is expected to begin redeveloping its downtown area where the sites are located around 2011.

The agency said it will cooperate with related ministries to form a consortium of developers to take part in Shanghai’s redevelopment projects to ensure the sites remain preserved.

In 2004, the Chinese government held a public bidding to develop the area around a building which served as the Korean interim government’s headquarters in Shanghai during Japan’s occupation of Korea, but postponed the bidding indefinitely.

Also on the preservation list is the Lu Xun Park where independence fighter Yoon Bong-gil bombed a birthday celebration for the then Japanese emperor in 1932.
