A delegation of Buddhist followers will visit the United States this week as part of efforts to recover Buddhist cultural assets.

The delegation from the Jogye Order will travel to Boston on Wednesday to negotiate the return of a sarira reliquary, in the shape of a Tibetan Buddhist stupa, currently stored in the Museum of Fine Arts.

The silver reliquary was originally from Gaeseong in North Korea.

According to the Jogye Order, North Korea’s top Buddhist organization transferred to the South all authority regarding the return of the Buddhist cultural asset.

During their nine-day stay, the delegation of followers will also visit the missions of both Koreas to the U.N. in New York and convey a joint inter-Korean agreement on efforts to recover the reliquary. The group is also expected to urge the missions to raise international awareness on efforts to restore Buddhist cultural assets.
