Nuclear Envoy to Visit N.Korea

Deputy chief nuclear envoy Hwang Joon-kook will visit Pyongyang Thursday to discuss the disposal of unused fuel rods from the North’s Yongbyon nuclear reactor.

Hwang will lead a team of working-level officials and experts from the Korea Hydro and Nuclear Power Company, the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute and the foreign and unification ministries.

Pyongyang approved Seoul’s request late last month for permission to send an inspection team to the North’s nuclear site.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade says the team will examine the technical and economical aspects before making a decision on how to dispose of the unused fuel rods.

The South Korean delegation will also discuss energy aid to North Korea in return for completing the second-phase of denuclearization in accordance with the six-party agreement.
