The head of the international department of China's Communist Party has arrived in Pyongyang.
The North’s official Korean Central Television said Wang Jiarui and his delegation arrived in Pyongyang on Wednesday, where they were received by North Korean officials and China’s ambassador to North Korea. Details and the purpose of the trip were not disclosed.
Wang has met with reclusive North Korean leader Kim Jong-il at crucial times in the past, including in February 2005 when Pyongyang declared that it had nuclear weapons. Attention is being drawn to whether Wang and Kim will meet this week.
The Chinese official may discuss denuclearization of North Korea during his visit that comes shortly after the launch of a new U.S. government.
The two countries may also discuss the idea of their leaders visiting each other’s nation to mark the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between Pyongyang and Beijing.
