UN Mulls Adding Ancient Medical Book to Heritage List

The U.N. Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, UNESCO, is deciding whether to include a book on traditional Korean medicine in its world heritage list.

The Korean government requested in March last year that the U.N. agency include “Donguibogam” on its Memory of the World Register.

The Ministry for Welfare, Health and Family Affairs says UNESCO’s Memory of the World Programme will reach a decision on the matter around July. The designation is expected to contribute to the worldwide advancement and legitimacy of oriental medicine.

UNESCO is reviewing various factors of the book, including its cultural influence, historical value, quality of preserved information and its author’s achievements.

The book was compiled by Heo Jun, a Joseon Dynasty royal doctor in 1613. The Korean government designated the 25-volume collection as a national treasure in 1991.
