The Requiem Mass for the late Cardinal Kim Sou-hwan will be held in the name of Pope Benedict the 16th at the request of the Vatican.
The papal nuncio to Seoul, Osvaldo Padilla, says that the Holy See on Thursday appointed Cardinal Nicholas Cheong Jin-suk as a special envoy to celebrate the funeral Mass on behalf of the pope. The ceremony is scheduled for 10 am Friday.
Meanwhile, a steady stream of mourners paid their last respects to the late cardinal. On the fourth day of mourning on Thursday, more than 90-thousand people visited Myeongdong Cathedral in Seoul, boosting the total number of visitors to 340-thousand so far.
Earlier in the day, the late cardinal’s body was placed in a casket engraved with his insignia. The body was open to the public during a ten-minute viewing before the casket was closed. He was dressed in the same vestment and mitre he wore when he was celebrating Mass while alive.
At the late cardinal’s request, the funeral service will be kept simple. He will be laid to rest at a cemetery for Roman Catholic priests in Yongin, south of Seoul. Cardinal Kim died Monday at the age of 87.
