5 Candidates Named for Sejong Statue Project

The Seoul Metropolitan Government has narrowed down its candidacy pool for the creation of a statue of King Sejong to be displayed at downtown’s Gwanghwamun Square.

The candidates are Hongik University Professor Kim Young-won and professional sculptors Kang Kwan-wook, Park Suk-won, Park Choong-heum and Shim Jung-soo.

Seoul city says a selection committee comprised of university professors and critics narrowed down their choices from an original pool of 53 candidates recommended by local schools and sculpture organizations.

The five will each submit a design proposal for the Sejong statue by next month which the final selection committee will use to make their decision. The project is expected to be completed by July.
