A South Korean company operating in the inter-Korean Gaeseong Industrial Complex has halted part of its automated production by unilateral order of North Korean officials.
Unification Ministry spokesman Kim Ho-nyoun told KBS Thursday that the North notified a South Korean silverware manufacturer to partially halt production, raising issue with the company’s air pollution level. The North then withdrew all the North Korean staff. Twenty percent of the company’s automated production has thus been replaced by manual operations.
Kim said that as a follow-up measure, the Gaeseong managing committees from both sides agreed to have a South Korean organization assess the level of air pollution emitted by the Korean company and administer readjustments if deemed necessary.
Earlier on Wednesday, North Korea announced that companies operating in the complex that delay wage payments to their employees will be subject to sanctions.
North Korean authorities also demanded an additional allowance for employees who work 24 hours or more straight.
