Gov’t Calls on NK to Restore Communications

The South Korean government has expressed regret over North Korea’s decision to cut off inter-Korean military communications during a South Korea-U.S. military drill.

Seoul urged Pyongyang to not only withdraw the measure, but to allow visits by South Koreans to North Korea’s Mount Geumgang resort and Gaeseong Industrial Complex in accordance with inter-Korean agreements on travel and communications.

The government made the demand in a statement issued by a Unification Ministry spokesman.

The spokesman also reiterated that the joint “Key Resolve” drill between South Korea and the U.S., which began Monday, is part of an annually scheduled defense drill. The ministry called on Pyongyang to refrain from defaming South Korea or heightening tensions on the Korean Peninsula.
