The city office said Monday that the Seoul city government will offer special discounts on subway and bus fares for foreigners coming to the capital to watch the World Cup soccer finals. In addition, Seoulites who purchase tickets for matches taking place at the Sangnam World Cup Stadium will be offered two free subway tickets to the arena. These and other measures were announced at a meeting of senior city officials, presided over by Seoul Mayor Goh Kun, held two days before the 100-day countdown to the event's opening ceremony. Under the measures, the city will distribute two subway tickets, each worth 700 won, to some 180,000 domestic purchasers of World Cup tickets and sell commemorative World Cup metro passes, offering a 25-percent discount, exclusively to foreigners. Members of the foreign press covering the matches will be given the passes free of charge. The metropolitan government will also operate the maximum number of flights possible linking South Korea's Gimpo and Japan's Haneda airports. South Korea and Japan will co-host the 2002 FIFA World Cup finals May 31 to June 30. Seoul's Sangnam Stadium will hold three of the 32 matches to be played at venues across Korea.
